Designing and implementing liability driven investment portfolios requires a deep understanding of markets as well as technical knowledge. Our experienced team is based in London and Rotterdam using proprietary front-to-end portfolio management and in-house collateral management systems to constantly monitor the portfolios. His focus is to help them achieve stable growth in their funding position, with no nasty surprises. The aim being to make them resilient and better placed to withstand turmoil in financial markets. Tony has over 20 years'​ experience in the pensions industry and has also been a Scheme Actuary and a corporate pensions adviser. He regularly speaks at conferences and seminars on pensions issues, and is quoted in both the national and trade press. He translates complex issues into easily digestible language to help his clients quickly and efficiently achieve their goals.

Before joining Cardano, James worked at Man Group for 7 years, where he was an Investment Specialist in the FRM fund of funds division. James graduated from the University of Southampton with a MSc in International Financial Markets in which he was awarded a Distinction. He also has a Bachelor of Science in Geography from the University of Sheffield, and holds Financial Risk Management (FRM) and Chaterered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) qualifications.

Before joining Cardano, Steven worked at Aon Hewitt for 8 years, where he was a Senior Consultant in the firm's Investment Consulting practice. Steven graduated from the London School of Economics with a First Class Honours degree in Business Mathematics and Statistics, and is a CFA Charterholder.

Before joining Cardano, Andrew worked at Mercer as an Investment Analyst in the company’s Investment Consulting division.  Prior to that Andrew worked at Fidelity in their client servicing team following a brief time within the world of professional golf.  Andrew graduated from Imperial College London in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Medical Sciences with an emphasis on Psychology and Psychiatry and is a CFA Charterholder.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) from Colgate University and a Masters in Business Administration from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

Ralph is responsible for setting up Cardano’s Defined Contribution business. He has spent over two decades working with institutions and individuals to help solve their financial, investment and risk management challenges. Prior to his time at Cardano, he was European Director of Consulting at Mercer Investment Consulting and the Senior Director in charge of Alexander Forbes Asset Consultants (South Africa). Ralph is a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. He graduated as a Bachelor of Economic Science from the University of the Witwatersrand.

He has worked in the pensions industry for over five years, most recently spending nearly three years with Towers Watson as a Business Development Analyst for the Investment team. Prior to this he has worked in the enhanced annuity team at Just Retirement and for a superannuation fund in Melbourne, Australia. He graduated from university in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Politics and is currently pursuing Part 2 of the Investment Management Certificate.

She also spent six months in Aon Hewitt’s fiduciary management division on the portfolio management team. Prior to joining Cardano Phil was Head of Business Development EMEA at Aviva Investors and has also worked at Credit Suisse, Zurich, CIS, Scottish Mutual. His formative years were spent as a pensions consultant at Hogg Robinson Benefit Consultants. Phil has over 30 years’ of pensions and investment experience.

Kerrin founded and leads Cardano’s UK team and has overall responsibility for the UK business. Kerrin is widely accepted as one of the UK’s investment thought leaders, playing an influential role in pioneering many concepts that are in mainstream use today, such as liability driven investing, fiduciary management and diversifying assets. Before setting up Cardano in the UK, Kerrin spent 15 years as an investment adviser at Aon Hewitt. Kerrin graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Economics, and qualified as an actuary in 1995.

Andrew earned a Masters degree from Oxford University in Physics and Philosophy, has a Masters in Actuarial Finance from Imperial College London and is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries.

Martin has over 15 years’ experience having worked in a number of operational roles within hedge funds and investment banks. Prior to joining Cardano, Martin was the Operations Manager for Windmill Hill Asset Management. He was responsible for fund administration, fund accounting and client reporting. Martin holds the CFA certificate in Investment Performance Measurement and the Investment Management Certificate.

Jens graduated from Tilburg University as a Master of Science in Investment Analysis and as a Master of Science in the Economics and Finance of Ageing.

Prior to joining in January 2016, Luke worked as a quantitative analyst at Callisto Asset Management, a systematic hedge fund, covering risk management and performance analysis. Luke fulfilled a similar role within the Solo Capital Group, managing market risk and developing risk models for the CFD business. Luke graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2012 with a BSc in Economics and is currently working towards an MSc in Finance at the London School of Economics.

Prior to joining in 2014, Angel worked at Towers Watson as an analyst in the company's Structured Products Team, specialising in delivering LDI solutions for large UK pension schemes for 2 years. Angel has a Masters degree in Finance from Imperial College London and a BSc (Hons) degree in Management from Warwick Business School. Angel is a CFA Charterholder.

Keith is Chief Investment Officer at Cardano. He heads the investment team, chairs the Portfolio Construction Committee and has ultimate responsible for the risk taking and investment risk management of Cardano’s client portfolios. His primary focus is on portfolio construction, bringing together the investment ideas generated by the manager research, strategy and LDI teams into a cohesive portfolios for clients. Prior to joining Cardano in 2008, Keith worked as an investment manager at GAM managing a variety of multi-asset and hedge fund portfolios. Keith started his career as an actuary before moving into investments at RMB International in London, part of the First Rand Group. Keith graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand South Africa, with a BSc in Statistics & Actuarial Science and a BSc (Hons) in Actuarial science and qualified as an actuary in 1997.

Simon is responsible for real estate manager research. He is also focused on real asset investment and provides support on the private equity portfolio. Prior to joining Cardano, Simon worked at Land Securities Plc as a Portfolio Investment Manager in the retail team. Prior to that, Simon worked at The Crown Estate as an Investment Manager and Analyst where he covered both direct and indirect real estate investment as well as investment strategy. Before this, Simon joined INGs private real estate funds team in London after starting his career as a graduate surveyor in Edinburgh with Lambert Smith Hampton. Simon graduated from Heriot-Watt University with an Msc in Real Estate Investment and Development and also holds an undergraduate MA in Geography from The University of St Andrews. Simon is a qualified Chartered Surveyor (MRICS) and a member of the Investment Property Forum (IPF).

Prior to that, Hannah worked at Herbert Smith Freehills LLP for 5 years and 2 months. For the first 3 years, Hannah worked on the Client Account Team and then joined the Advocacy Unit as a Legal PA, supporting a QC/Partner and a team of Solicitor Advocates.

Hemmo is Head of Strategy at Cardano. He is responsible for all economic and market views affecting asset allocation and liability hedging. Prior to joining in 2008, Hemmo worked at Fortis MeesPierson, as Head of the Global Discretionary Fund Portfolio Team, running EUR 5bn in assets. In addition, Hemmo was a member of the International Policy Committee, responsible for the asset allocation views of Fortis Private Banking. Hemmo started his career in 1997 as a global investment strategist at Robeco. Hemmo holds a BSc in Economics from the London School of Economics and a Masters degree in Economics, from the Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Carl is an Investment Strategist at Cardano. He focuses on economic, market and cross asset research, which is used in asset allocation decisions across both fiduciary and advisory portfolios. Prior to joining in 2010, Carl worked at Mercer as an analyst in the Investment Consulting Team, providing strategic investment advice to large UK pension schemes. Carl has also worked within Cardano’s Manager Research Team, as an investment analyst focussing on developed market rates and macro trading strategies for 2 years, and Cardano’s Client Team, providing strategic asset allocation and liability driven investment advice for 3 years. Carl graduated from The University of Oxford in 2008 with a Masters degree in Chemistry (MChem) and is a CFA charterholder.

Prior to joining in 2015, Charmaine worked at Mercer as a junior consultant in the Financial Strategy Group (FSG), based in Edinburgh, for nearly 7 years. In addition, Charmaine was a member of the FSG’s Tools Group and was originally part of Mercer’s Retirement Business, joining as a graduate in 2009. Charmaine qualified as a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries in 2012 and has a First Class Honours degree in Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics from Heriot-Watt University.

Prior to joining Cardano, Chris was a Portfolio Manager at Oakley Alternative Investment Management, where he co-managed their flagship Fund of Hedge Funds. Prior to that, Chris was responsible for the European research of a large US Fund of Hedge Funds at K2 Advisors. Before this, Chris co-managed a direct investing multi-asset class global absolute return fund at HSBC Investments after starting his career at HSBC Investment Bank. Chris holds a Business Management degree from the University of Reading and is a CFA Charterholder.

Julita started her career as a Portfolio Manager Assistant at Margetts Wealth Management. Annalisa graduated from The University Cattolica in Milan in 1997, with a degree in Economics and a Masters in International Economics & Finance.

Jason holds a double degree majoring in Economics/Accounting & Psychology respectively, from the Australian National University.

Max is a LDI Manager at Cardano. He is focussed on core LDI Portfolio management, active trade ideas and generation of strategies around our clients liability hedging programmes. Before joining Cardano, Max worked at State Street Global Advisors (SSgA) in London for six years, focussing primarily on LDI Portfolio Management along with Fixed Income risk analysis. Prior to his time at SSgA he worked for a mixture of well-known Banks and Asset Managers (Deutsche Bundesbank, Societe Generale and LBBW Asset Management). Max graduated from Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich in 2006 with a Diplom in economics. He earned the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and is a Certified Financial Risk Manager.

Simone is responsible for macro manager research, cover discretionary and quantitative trading strategies and diversified growth funds. Prior to joining Cardano, Simone worked at FRM in London as a Hedge Fund Analyst covering trading strategies. Prior to that, Simone worked at Duemme Capital (Banca Esperia Group) as a Hedge Fund Analyst and as a Portfolio Manager. Simone started his career in Milan working for the ING Group as a Business Analyst. Sotiris is an investment analyst at Cardano. He is involved in quantitative manager research, portfolio and trade modelling and risk measurement, as well as providing direct support to the CIO. Prior to joining in 2014, Sotiris worked at a Fund of Funds as a senior portfolio analyst and prior to that at Allenbridge HedgeInfo, a Hedge Fund Research and Ratings firm. Sotiris graduated from SOAS, University of London with a BA in 2002, and an MA in 2005.

Jindi is an investment analyst at Cardano. She works directly with the CIO on portfolio, trade and risk modelling and monitoring. She is also involved in qualitative and quantitative manager research. Prior to joining in 2010, Jindi graduated with an MSc in Finance from City University Cass Business School and a BSc in Financial Engineering from Southwestern University of Finance and Economy in China.

Albert started his career at JP Morgan, where he was an OTC Derivatives Specialist and holds a degree in Business Management & Finance & Economics from the University of Winchester.

Michaël is Co-CEO of the Cardano Group and is responsible for business and solution development. Before joining Cardano, Michaël spent his career at Goldman Sachs (GS) with postings in London, New York, Hong Kong and Singapore. In the last 6 years of his time at GS he was responsible for the Pension and Insurance Solutions Group, working with institutions across Europe and globally. He left GS in 2013, after 23 years, having been elected a partner in 2002. He graduated from the University of Louvain (Belgium) with a Masters in Economics and the City University Business School with a Masters in Business Administration.

Theo is the founder and co-CEO of Cardano, professor of Risk Management at the VU University Amsterdam and chairman of the Cardano Development Foundation.

Over the past 25 years he has published many books and articles, and worked to improve education on risk management with the ambition to create more robust financial systems, which in turn will help better retirement planning.

Together with Monty Python’s Terry Jones, Theo produced the documentary “Boom Bust Boom” on financial crises and endogenous instability, with a clear call to policy makers and academics to adjust economics to human nature. To further widen the public understanding of economics, he supported the development of the website Economy, ECNMY.org. This website is the result of a collaboration between Cardano Insights and the worldwide Rethinking Economics student movement.

Patrick joined Cardano in 2015 as CFO of the Cardano Group. Prior to Cardano he worked for Goldman Sachs (GS) for 19 years as a Managing Director in the company's Securities Division. In the last 5 years of his time at GS he was the CFO of the European Equities Division and the Global FX Division. Patrick has a Master in Business Administration from Harvard Business School and a Master in International Affairs from the Graduate Institute in Geneva.

Harold joined Cardano in 2014 as CEO of Cardano Netherlands and oversees the running of the Dutch business. Prior to joining Cardano, he was at ING for 17 years where he was Director of Market Risk at ING Bank and a member of the Leadership Council of ING Group. From 1993 till 1997 Harold worked at BNG Bank heading the Quantitative Policy Support business. Harold holds a MSc degree in Physics from Eindhoven University of Technology.

Kerrin founded and leads Cardano’s UK team and has overall responsibility for the UK business. Kerrin is widely accepted as one of the UK’s investment thought leaders, playing an influential role in pioneering many concepts that are in mainstream use today, such as liability driven investing, fiduciary management and diversifying assets. Before setting up Cardano in the UK, Kerrin spent 15 years as an investment adviser at Aon Hewitt. Kerrin graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Economics, and qualified as an actuary in 1995.

As Head of Legal Claire's role includes advising on client contracts, managing the legal due diligence of proposed investments, negotiating documentation for derivative instruments and advising Cardano on all other legal aspects of its business. Claire is a Partner at Cardano and has particular interest in advocating diversity in the workplace. Before joining Cardano, Claire was a senior associate at Travers Smith, where she specialised in Investment Funds, Private Equity and Mergers and Acquisitions.  During her time at Travers Smith, Claire led the structuring and formation of private equity and hedge funds, managed the structural re-organisation of various fund managers and advised institutional investors on their investments in a wide range of funds. Claire qualified as a solicitor in 1999, and has a degree in Modern Languages from the University of Oxford.

Geordie advises on a broad range of matters but with a focus on structuring Cardano clients' private equity and hedge fund investments, as well as advising on Cardano’s own range of investment funds. Before joining, Geordie worked in the investment funds team at Macfarlanes, principally on private equity and hedge fund formation; acting for both managers and investors across a broad range of strategies. He trained with Macfarlanes and spent six months seconded to Schroders. Geordie graduated from BPP law school with distinction and holds a masters in history from Edinburgh University (2009).

Ralph oversees all aspects of conduct and prudential compliance and leads Cardano's relationship with the Financial Conduct Authority. Prior to joining Cardano, Ralph worked at Mercer as Head of Compliance Operations for Europe (conduct and risk) and as a regulatory consultant at Ernst & Young. Ralph is an ACII and has also completed the Investment Management Certificate, Advanced Financial Planning Certificate and Risk in Financial Services qualifications among others.

Clare is responsible for operational due diligence reviews on all fund investments in our clients’ portfolios. Prior to joining Cardano, Clare worked at Permal Asset Management, a New York and London based fund of hedge funds. She was responsible for operational due diligence on hedge fund managers in Europe and North America. Before this, Clare worked in investment management audit at PwC, where she completed her ACA chartered accountancy qualification with the ICAEW. Previously, she completed her undergraduate MA (hons) at the University of Glasgow followed by her MSc at SOAS, University of London. Clare has also lived and worked internationally as a consultant accountant and other roles.

Miriam specialises in advising on the broad range of investment funds in which Cardano's clients invest including working with fund managers to set up bespoke products.  She also advises Cardano on its role as investment manager to its own range of funds, in addition to a wide range of other matters including client agreements and commercial contracts.  Prior to joining Cardano Miriam was an Associate in the Investment Funds team at Travers Smith where she also trained.  Miriam graduated from the University of Oxford with a degree in Physiology and Psychology.

Elena advises on all aspects of derivatives and financing matters. Prior to joining Cardano, Elena worked at Linklaters in London as an Associate in the Derivatives and Structured Products Department. Elena trained with Linklaters where she spent time on client secondments at financial institutions such as Deutsche Bank, Credit Suisse and Citigroup. Prior to that Elena spent two years completing a Graduate Diploma in Law and Legal Practice Course in London in order to become an English-qualified solicitor. Before moving to London Elena worked at Linklaters' Moscow office for 6 years first as a trainee and then as a Russian qualified lawyer in the Banking & Finance Department. Elena graduated from the Academy of National Economy under the Government of the Russian Federation in Moscow in 2005 with a Russian law degree.

Mark is responsible for managing operational risk within Cardano and for ensuring that Cardano operates within a strong control environment to minimise risk to the company and its clients. Prior to joining Cardano in 2015, Mark worked for Mercer as part of their Delegated Solutions team.  Mark has a degree in Finance and is an Associate of the Pensions Management Institute and a Prince 2 Practitioner.

Loretta is Personal Assistant to Cardano’s Head of Legal in addition to supporting the Legal and Compliance team. Prior to joining Cardano, Loretta worked at Hall and Wilcox, a law firm in Australia, for 8 years. Loretta initially worked as a Senior Legal Secretary in the Accident Litigation department supporting a Partner and team of lawyers, and was then promoted to be the Department Coordinator overseeing and training a team of legal secretaries. Loretta holds an Advance Diploma of Business (Legal Practice) from Swinburne University, Australia.
